Discord server setup like a pro

Roles, permissions, channels, onboarding and safety. The stuff that makes a server feel run by someone.

FreeChill 5 levels about 32 min badge: Server Architect 2 finished

We've set up a lot of servers and fixed even more. Most problems come from the same five things: a messy role ladder, permissions set channel by channel, too many channels, no first impression, and no plan for a raid. Five levels, one per thing. No bots required, although we'll show you where one saves time.

Roles are the skeleton

About 6 minutes

Open Server Settings, then Roles. The order of that list matters more than anything else in your server. A role can only manage roles that sit BELOW it. That goes for people and for bots.

a ladder that works
Owner (you, top of the list)
Admin (1 or 2 people you'd trust with your house keys)
Mod
Bots (put bot roles here, above the roles they hand out)
Booster
Member (people who passed verification)
Color / ping roles
@everyone (always at the bottom, it's everyone)
  • Give Administrator to as few people as possible. It skips every other rule in the server.
  • Mods get what they need: Timeout, Kick, Ban, Manage Messages. Not Manage Roles or Manage Server unless they really need it.
  • Color and ping roles get zero permissions. They're cosmetic.

"The bot can't give the role" is almost always this: the bot's own role sits below the role it's trying to give. Drag the bot's role up. Done.

Boss question

Your verification bot says it can't give people the Member role. Most likely fix?
